2nd Women Build House Completed
February 22, 2004

The walls were put up on a day when the skies opened up and the rain poured down. Thanks to a tough group of volunteers, the walls and roof were put on in a day! Special thanks go to Rob Fleming from Better Living who recruited a great crew of volunteers, Eric Degraff from Weyerhaeuser Corp., and all the wonderful people who worked and did a fine job, despite the weather.

Most of our volunteer work is done on Saturdays. Looking back, it rained an awful lot of weekends when we wanted to build! Progress may have been slow at times, but it was sure. Now we’re finished with this, our 2nd Women Build house in Orange County. Anne Martin and her granddaughter, Rebecca are anxious to move into their new home.

We have so many volunteers and donors to thank. First and foremost, thanks to Marilyn Allman who supervised this job. Hers is a major responsibility and we cannot say enough good things about Marilyn.

Thanks also to Timbersmiths for labor and equipment; L&D Plumbing, Noland’s Supply, & Ferguson’s Plumbing who donated all the plumbing fixtures; Alan Tolbert for the electrical work; Kirk McManus of Rappahannock Locksmiths for the locks; Woodberry Forest School for crews of hardworking boys; Rick Brown from the LOW Garden Club for landscaping; Don Hughes of the Orange Paint Center for paint; Jefferson Homebuilders who donated the land; and Whirlpool Corp. who provided the range and refrigerator. Many thanks also to Dick & John Nunley of Better Living who donated windows; Earl’s Glass for window screens; Richard White of White’s Masonry for the foundation construction; also the following for donating plants for the landscaping: Grelen Nursery, Farmer Meadows, Battlefield Farms, & Ebenezer HeightsGreenhouses.

Unnamed, but very much appreciated are all the volunteers who answered our calls for help. You came in good weather and bad; braved cold, snow and rain; your willingness to pitch in and your good spirits helped us all to keep working. Thank you!! Special thanks also to you who brought lunches for the hungry and tired work crews. Whether it was iced tea on a hot day, or warm soup on a cold day, you were always greatly appreciated. The Dedication of this new home was on Sunday, Feb. 22nd.

We shared fellowship and cookies, and we all got the grand tour. Rebecca is especially pleased that she got to choose her own paint color for her bedroom! It’s a beautiful pink with a matching wallpaper border.
